Governor Bush Appoints Eric Buermann To The Miami River Commission

MIAMI, FL – May 24, 2005 – Eric Buermann, of counsel with the Miami-based Steel Hector & Davis LLP, has been appointed by Florida’s governor, Jeb Bush, as his representative to the Miami River Commission.

The Miami River, which runs 5.5 miles from Biscayne Bay through the heart of Miami and towards the Miami International Airport, is home to 32 private terminals and manages more than $4 billion in cargo a year, making it Florida's fourth largest commercial seaport in dollar volume.

The Miami River Commission was formed by the Florida Legislature to act as the central point for collecting, classifying and distributing all public policy and project information relating to the Miami River. The organization’s mission is to help ensure that government agencies, businesses and residents speak with one invariant voice on river related issues.

As the governor’s representative to the Miami River Commission, Buermann will work closely with the organization to improve every aspect of river life for the residents and business owners that continue to make the Miami River community, through its re-development, a thriving presence within the City of Miami.

One of the commission’s major projects is the massive dredging and environmental clean-up of the Miami River’s beds and sides. “This is the first time in approximately 70 years that the river has been completely dredged,” says Buermann.

As a boater, environmentalist, and land/governmental lawyer, Buermann also feels a special family bond with the Miami River – his two daughters are sixth-generation Miamians whose great, great, great-grandfather, Rev. William Stanton, was Miami’s first Baptist minister and preached in a tent along the banks of the river prior to founding downtown’s Central Baptist Church, formerly known as the Lemon City Baptist Church.

Buermann who served as general counsel for the Florida Bush/Cheney 2000 Campaign, focuses his practice on the government and regulatory issues, real estate and international trade.
